Business Picks up in April—Sold

In the 30+ years I’ve been earning a living with art, I’ve seen that business usually picks up in April. This year is no exception.

Salt Creek Trail, 8×8″
Sequoia Gigantea XVI, 6×18″
Lemons on the Tree, 6×6″
Pomegranate on the Tree, 6×6″
Poppy, 6×6″
Lemon on the Tree II, 6×6″
The Best View, 10×20” (I added a wind machine for the customer, but didn’t rephotograph it)
Spring Citrus, 12×16″

When paintings sell to people passing through town, I replace those with similar paintings. Lots of sequoia trees (AKA “redwoods” or “big trees”), oranges, lemons, pomegranates, and poppies. I’d rather paint repetitious subjects than go job hunting.

  1. I love the Salt Creek trail picture. It looks like such a peaceful place to walk and absorb the greenery of Spring. I love things that look peaceful:)

    • Melissa, I’m with you on this peaceful thing. . .

  2. Congratulations on your art sales! These paintings are so gorgeous. I especially love the tall Sequoia.

    • Thank you, Michelle! Sometimes it seems as if I am just painting to fill my shelves, so when I tally sales, it keeps me going.

  3. “I’d rather paint repetitious subjects than go job hunting.” Ha! That’s hilarious and I can appreciate the sentiment. Plus, I’m sure you get to really hone your craft on those subjects so you get more and more attuned with how you want to portray certain things!

    • Elisabeth, I do my best to be realistic about earning a living as an artist, painting and drawing what sells rather than what “inspires” me. A wise man who was a successful artist taught that a great source of inspiration was the bills in his PO Box. So I choose to challenge myself by paint things that are a bit repetitious, and I really hope I never “phone it in” (although I am sure there must be a load of paintings out there that I’d like to retouch).
