Maybe I had a stroke. A memory lapse. A fugue state. Whatever happened, I am now in the midst of the most difficult commission I have ever accepted. It breaks the Biggest Rule*, which is No Portraits, and always always always, No Face Smaller Than an Egg (in case I break the Biggest Rule).
That used to mean a chicken egg, but now, IF I were to accept a portrait commission, it would need to be an ostrich egg.
So what happened?? I accepted a commission with 14 faces the size of a hummingbird egg, and 6 faces the size of 1/4 of a hummingbird egg.

The weirdest part is that I am enjoying the challenge. This could be because I warned the customers that capturing likenesses was highly unlikely.

And yet, I am trying like crazy to capture likenesses.

Yeppers, dropped on my head.

You’re doing a great job on those tiny faces. I knew whose some of the faces were right off the bat in the very first drawing. Rise to those challenges and flex and stretch your skills! Always fascinating to get to watch these pieces grow. Thanks for sharing.,
Laurie, that is greatly encouraging—Thank You!!
Looks great! I recognize Charlie & Leuder and even Vic Kimsey!
Really and truly, Nikki??? Wowsa, the only people I knew are the Huddleston brothers and Charlie, so they were just random faces to me. THANKY YOU!!!
Oh yes, you have all of them recognizable. Even at this beginning stage. Keep up the good work and have more confidence in your own ability!
What were you thinking?
It reminds me of a commission I (foolishly) accepted to crochet an afghan for a king-sized bed in tight, single crochet stitches. It took me fer-ev-ah but I did it, and you will, too!
P.S. That ruler is metal, right? I have one like it that my father used during his journalism teaching days.
Sharon, the ruler is informally known as a “pica pole”, and yes, it is metal.
I wasn’t thinking ahead; it just seemed like a casual conversation, and I didn’t know the right time to say, “Nope, too small”, or didn’t understand that they wanted 3 versions of the band or that they would choose a small size of drawing to squish it all in.
