Time Out

In The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, she insists that field trips are very important to cultivating creativity. Yesterday, I took her advice (or was I using it as an excuse to mess around instead of work?) Have you ever heard of the Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno? I’ve been wanting to visit since 1978 but just haven’t. The gardens get closed from time to time for renovation, and when they are open, I am usually in Mineral King. Yesterday, I finally got to see this incredible place! http://www.undergroundgardens.info/  I can’t wait to go back (wish they rented it out for overnight stays!)img_1418.jpgimg_1416.jpgimg_1414.jpg

  1. Jana,

    You are an amazing artist.

  2. Yes! I have been there, twice! The first time was most impressive. The second time it looked as if it needed some upkeep. I was at a nursing home in Keene, Texas this month sitting in on an activity entitled, “Mothballs in Your Attic,” used to prompt the memories of long ago. The discussion was on childhood vacations and I mentioned how our family would stop at The Big Orange each summer on our way back from our yearly camping trip. That rekindled a memory of one of the residents who asked where that was, because she thought her and her husband had stopped by there on a trip one time. Not sure if we were talking about the same place, I asked her if she had ever been to the Fresno Underground Gardens and she said she had and that she hadn’t thought about that place in a very long time! Small world, huh?

  3. I have never been there in person, but I did see a “California’s Gold” program featuring this unique place. Heuell, as is always the case, was fascinated by it all! Some day I think it would be fun to stay there overnight and then zip up to Mineral King in the morning.
