Will Autumn ever arrive?

We had the coolest most pleasant June ever, and I kept thinking we would pay for it in September. We are. It is still hot hot hot. September 21 is usually the first day of Autumn but the thermometer is clueless. In Mineral King over the weekend I was seeking signs of Autumn. The squirrels and chipmunks are very very busy, and some leaves are turning. These are willows in bright yellow.img_1925.JPGMeanwhile, the aspens are as oblivious to the change of season as is the thermometer, but the light has a different quality to it.img_1922.JPGIt’s the tall dry grasses that really tell me the season in Mineral King.tall-dry-grasses.JPG

  1. Thanks, John. I actually knew that but consider the full spread of the fungus itself is a sign of Autumn and I will take whatever I can get!

  2. Actually the yellow willows are because of a fungus on the green leaves, not because the willow leaves themselves are changing to yellow. It’s pretty and probably not a bad thing.

  3. I just LOVE the aspen colors in the fall. Did you ever see the postcard that my grandfather had printed of Aspen Flat in October with bright yellow colors? If not, let me know and I’ll send you one.

  4. HI Jana!

Beautiful pictures of Mineral King… wish we’d been there! Meanwhile, Fall has arrived here in Denver… 38 degrees early today and sleet by mid-morning. We’re headed to Estes Park / Rocky Mountain National Park tomorrow for a conference (God is SO good!) and will be on the lookout for similar beautiful scenes!

    Thanks for the inspiration!
